Jury selection continued to next week in 'Boy in the Box' case

Jury selection began Friday for Timothy Ferriter, the man accused of keeping his adopted teenage son in a box in his garage.

Timothy and his wife, Tracy Ferriter, are facing an additional child neglect charge, which the couple will be arraigned on, as well, on top of one count each of false imprisonment and aggravated child abuse.

Jury selection was not completed, but the judge estimated the process should be finished Monday.

The husband's jury selection started at 9 a.m., with the presiding judge going over the day's events. About 20 minutes later, prospective jury members were brought into the courtroom and briefed on the case they could serve on.

This proceeding is being filmed," the judge said. "I want you to understand anyone can come from the community and watch a trial."

The presiding judge told potential jurors about their privacy and media coverage of the case then asked the room if these factors would hinder their ability to be impartial and fair. Previous media exposure to the case and personal hardships were also questions from the judge.

Prospective jurors were instructed to not watch newscasts or read news articles regarding the case and excused for the day. The process will start again Monday morning.

The couple is accused of keeping their 14-year-old adopted son in an 8-foot by 8-foot box in their garage.

After the Ferriters reported their adopted son missing, police stopped by their home to investigate. While taking a look around the residence, officials found the box.

The box, said investigators, contained a mattress and a bucket.

Tracy is set to be tried separately on a different date yet to be disclosed.
