Payette National Forest fire burns 2,500 acres, visible for miles

BOISE, Idaho (AP) A wildfire visible for miles is forcing closures on Idaho's Payette National Forest, as gusty winds, dry weather and low humidity continue to vex firefighters.

The Wesley fire is burning on four square miles in steep and remote areas, with smoke from burning subalpine fir, ponderosa pine and Douglas fir visible from two Idaho state highways, as well as the towns of Council, New Meadows and McCall.

A spokesman on Monday said air resources will continue to use retardant and water drops throughout the day as firefighters try to gain the upper hand.

Though the summer is waning, fires continue to burn across Idaho, including the Mustang Complex of wildfires on the Montana border that has forced an evacuation order for some residents of the sparsely-populated region in Lemhi County.
