Makbul has a high-energy kickstart to the day, with green drinks and energizing workouts. "Best morning routine is drinking hot water with lemon, going for my green smoothie and then kickboxing," she says. "Followed by breakfast and then the day starts."
Makbul makes a point of walking every day, especially when she doesn't have time for a workout. Research shows walking is incredibly beneficial for health. "Walking every day for 30 minutes does justice and wonders to your body," she says. Another tip from Makbul? Take the stairs whenever possible.
Makbul swears by Pilates for her toned, lean yet strong physique. "Pilates is a type of strength training exercise that encourages you to identify and work within the limits of your body," says Leanne Wonesh, an athletic trainer at Houston Methodist. "There's also an inherent mindfulness to it and a lot of breath work, which can help relieve tension and stress."
Running is Makbul's favorite workout, especially during the pandemic lockdowns when going to the gym wasn't an option. "Exercise has a dramatic antidepressive effect," says David J. Linden, PhD. "It blunts the brain's response to physical and emotional stress… Voluntary exercise is the single best thing one can do to slow the cognitive decline that accompanies normal aging."
Makbul enjoys the mental and physical benefits of regular yoga sessions. "Regular yoga practice may reduce levels of stress and body-wide inflammation, contributing to healthier hearts," say the experts at Johns Hopkins Health. "Several of the factors contributing to heart disease, including high blood pressure and excess weight, can also be addressed through yoga."
